Ganesh, also known as Ganapati, is immediately recognizable as the elephant-headed god. He is the Hindu God of wisdom and learning, as well as the remover of obstacles, and is consequently represents auspiciousness.
He is the son of Shiva and Parvati. In the most common representations of Ganesh, he appears as a pot-bellied figure. He is the patron God of wisdom and the arts, and is internationally revered. The story has it that Shiva returned home after a long journey and found a man in his wife's bedroom. In a fit of anger, he cut off the mans head, only to learn that it was his own grown up son. He then promised to replace his head with the head of the first being he saw, which happened to be that of an elephant. Goes to show that jealousy can definitely make you lose your head!
