In Greek mythology, Medusa was a monster, a Gorgon, generally described as a winged human female with venomous snakes instead of her hair. Anyone who saw her face would be turned to stone. The image of her head was considered to have the power to avert evil, and was used as a protective emblem, known as the Gorgoneion.
Medusa was beheaded by the hero Perseus, who continued to use her head to turn onlookers to stone, until he gave it to the goddess Athena.
